למקרים רבים של הופעת דם בצואת תינוקות אין סיבה ידועה. אם מלבד הדם בצואה, אם התינוק בריא בדרך כלל וגדל כהלכה, 
תופעה זו נפתרת מעצמה לעתים קרובות, אך תמיד יש לבדוק אותה אצל רופאו של התינוק. צבע הדם יכול לרמוז על מקורו.

למקרים רבים של הופעת דם בצואת תינוקות אין סיבה ידועה. אם מלבד הדם בצואה, התינוק בריא בדרך כלל וגדל כהלכה, תופעה זו נפתרת מעצמה לעתים קרובות, אך תמיד יש לבדוק אותה אצל רופאו של התינוק. צבע הדם רומז לך על מקורו. דם שמקורו במעי הגס או בפי הטבעת נוטה להיות אדום, וייתכן שהוא רק צובע מבחוץ את הצואה. אם מקור הדם גבוה יותר במערכת העיכול, אז בדרך כלל צבעו כהה יותר (חום כהה/ארגמן-סגול, שחור) והוא מעורב בכל הצואה ולא רק בצד החיצוני. כמה סיבות אפשריות לדם בצואת התינוק: • סיבה נפוצה לדם בצואת התינוק הינה קרע קל בפי הטבעת (פיסורה) כתוצאה ממאמץ של התינוק בהוצאת הצואה. מעט הדם מהפיסורה נראה בדרך כלל כהכתמה אדומה חיצונית על הצואה. • סיבה נפוצה אחרת לדם בצואת תינוקות הינה אלרגיות למזון. המזונות האלרגניים ביותר הינם מוצרי חלב פרה וסויה. למידע נוסף ראו Dairy and other Food Sensitivities in Breastfed Babies • סיבה נפוצה שלישית: במידה והאם סובלת מפטמות סדוקות או דימום אחר, התינוק עלול לבלוע מדם האם (מצב זה איננו מסוכן לתינוק), ודם האם עשוי להופיע בצואת התינוק. • לעיתים, דם בצואה עלול להיגרם מעודף חלב. על פי ד"ר ג'ק ניומן, הופעת דם בצואה של כמה תינוקות פסקה לחלוטין לאחר שנפתרה בעיית עודף החלב של האם. ניתן לפתור את בעיית עודף החלב בהליך המקובל; ייתכן שתהיה תועלת גם בלחיצת השד על מנת להגדיל את כמות השומן שהתינוק מקבל ביניקה. למידע נוסף על עודף חלב הגורם לדם בצואת התינוק, ראו Can a baby be allergic to breastmilk ?. • דווחו מספר מקרים של תינוקות שהחל להופיע דם ו/או ריר בצואה שלהם לאחר שהתחילו לקבל טיפות ויטמינים/פלואוריד, והדם נעלם לאחר שהופסק מתן הטיפות. • דם בצואה עשוי להיגרם גם מאי סבילות זמנית ללקטוז כתוצאה מדלקת במעי • סוגים מסוימים של שלשול מידבק יכולים לגרום לדם בצואת תינוקות, ביניהם סלמונלה (Salmonella ) ו-C. Difficile. C. Difficile הינו חיידק גדל במעי אם איזון החיידקים הופר; הרעלן עלול לפצוע את דופן המעי ולגרום להופעת דם בצואה. לתינוקות יונקים יש בדרך כלל תסמינים פחות חריפים מאשר לתינוקות שאינם יונקים, מכיוון שחלב אם מעכב את צמיחת החיידקים. • סיבות אפשריות נוספות הינן בעיות מעיים שונות כגון colitis, intussusception . האם הופעת דם בצואה מצריכה הגעה לחדר מיון? תמיד יש להתייעץ עם הרופא של התינוק כאשר יש דם בצואת התינוק, אבל הגעה למיון תלויה בהתנהגות הילד. אם התינוק שמח ונראה בריא, קבעי תור לרופא. אם לתינוק יש כאבי בטן, דימום משמעותי בצואה, שלשול, הקאה ו/או חום – נדרש טיפול רפואי דחוף יותר. לדברי ד"ר ג'יי גורדון, "כאשר יש בצואה דם מתגבר או באופן עקבי, או דם מעורב בריר (מתואר בכתובים כצואת "ג'לי דומדמניות"), מצב זה מצריך פניה מיידית לרופא". נכתב: 10/1/04 עדכון: 25/5/06
